UNDER 18s Match Report

LEIGH EAST 38 HINDLEY 4

Leigh East Under 18s charged to an impressive victory in their first game of the season. It was a rapid start from East who built a 22-4 lead at half-time.

There was no let up for the visitors either when despite scoring a try of their own they were unable to stop a young exciting backline that all played their part in a seven try victory.

Kieron Prescott eventually ended up with a hat-trick of tries while Dean Pickup, James Hutchinson and Matty Aspinall all got over the line. Ben Wharton had a big game in attack and defence, winning the man-of-the-match award. In the forwards Cobyn Fletcher had a big game alongside skipper Connor Grainey and Fletcher's efforts resulted in him getting a try while Kieran Wilkinson, fresh from helping Wigan Warriors U18s to victory over Leeds Rhinos earlier in the week, booted five goals.

"We got at them from the start and were solid in defence." Under 18s head coach Stuart Pugsley added.

Team: Prescott, Pickup, Wharton, Hutchinson, Aspinall; Lyon, Wilkinson; Grainey (c), Hughes, Clark, Hill, Fletcher, Woods. Subs: Cross, Wyche, Thorpe, Bond.

T: Prescott 3, Pickup 1, Fletcher 1, Hutchinson 1, Aspinall 1.

G: Wilkinson 5

In the build up to the game East welcomed one of their old boys back to the fold with Sean Maloney, a former halfback in the 1990s returning to the town for a visit from Australia.

After an excellent amateur career Sean joined Leigh and played for several seasons before emigrating. He played the remainder of his career down under before turning his hand to coaching.

Now the Head Coach of Corrimal Cougars, a club with strong connections to St George Illawarra, his flying visit to Leigh co-incided with preparation for the Hindley game and he was invited to take the squads final session by Stuart Pugsley.

"Me and Sean have been mates since we were kids and we both came through the East set-up before playing for Leigh."

"It was good to catch up with him and I was made up when he agreed to take the training session with the lads. Everyone got a lot out of the session. Sean will hopefully be bcak over around Christmas time and I'd love for him to take another session with us.
