East claim first road win of the season East claim first road win of the season

SALFORD CITY ROOSTERS 16

LEIGH EAST 40

By Dave Parkinson.

Leigh East finally registered their first away win of the season on Friday evening. They did it in style too, notching seven tries against Salford City Roosters.

Early exchanges between the teams were committed with East's starting front row of Jamie Waters and Adam Wilkes getting through plenty of carries while receiving good support from Jay Yarwood, Sam Grainey and an eager Ryan Hughes.

East opened the scores in the 8th minute after the Roosters had got downfield. Adam Holland kicked long from a scrum and Josh Adudwumaa won the race to the ball and then sped clear the remaining 45 metres. Tom Worthington added the first of six goals and East extended their lead after 21 minutes. An attack from deep started with a thunderous charge from Wilkes. A quick play-the-ball set Pat Rainford free and he turned the ball right to Adam Holland who drew a defender and released Chris Penn at the right second for the fullback to sail clear from 50 metres. Worthington goaled but Salford hit back two minutes later.

Burly forward Adam Taher proved a handful for the East defence and was held up over the line a number of times in the game. Taher ran strongly and crashed over from close range before also converting.

East scored their third try after 33 minutes when Jordan Hellam ran from dummy half and grubbered to the right, through the defence for Adam Holland to pounce. Worthington again goaled and the visitors created a couple of other chances to score including one for James Parkinson but had to be content with an 18-6 half-time advantage.

The first twenty minutes of the second half was a close affair. Salford City Roosters enjoyed more possession and notched the first try of the new half nine minutes in when second row Christian Higgins went over from close range. Joe Marchant goaled and the Roosters fancied their chances with Taher and Higgins held up a couple of times before Adudwumaa danced inside. The step back inside from Adudwumaa was something special, he beat four defenders to score his second try. Worthington's fourth goal again put twelve points between the teams.

Further East tries after 68 and 71 minutes made the game safe. First Sam Grainey beat Paul Morgan at the back of a scrum and ran twenty-five metres before Jake Beaumont crashed through the challenge of Oreofe Animashaun following a sweeping ball to the left. Home loose forward Joe Connor scored a consolation try but East finished strongly with Ben Parry darting over from dummy half in the final minute. Worthington completed the tally with his sixth goal and Leigh East earned a vital win.
